Overview & Traits

The Persian is a longhaired breed of cats characterized by its round face and shortened muzzle. Persian cats originated in Persia, which is now known as Iran. These exquisite felines are said to have initially appeared in Persia during the 1600s, making them one of the oldest and most well-known breeds in recorded history.[1]Recognized by the cat fancy since the late 19th century, it was developed first by the English, and then mainly by American breeders after the Second World War. In Britain, it is called the Longhair or Persian Longhair.

Trait Profile

Breed History

The origins of the Persian date back many decades, surrounded by fascinating lore and dedicated breeding programs. Early foundation cats were crossbred to solidify the standard traits we observe today. It quickly gained international recognition by the WCF and other major registries.

Living Needs

When it comes to the living environment, the Persian thrives in spaces where it can safely explore, play, and interact with its family. They benefit from vertical spaces like cat trees and regular mental stimulation. A balanced diet and routine veterinary check-ups are essential for their well-being.
